Crowdsourced Storytelling For The Modern Children’s Stage

As part of the One Million Dreamers program, BALANCE Edutainment and BALANCE Films are making the Pacha’s Pajamas musical script available to community theaters and schools worldwide. Performing groups are encouraged to adapt the script for their community by incorporating content to their communities and to crowdsource their own Pacha Jamma festival, where performers — from their group, the community and/or audience speak — sing or dance from a Nature’s EyeTM perspective.  The script is available royalty free to qualified educational programs, theater companies and clubs through June 21, 2013.  The first performing group in each region will be highlighted. For more information, contact stage@pachaspajamas.com or visit the Pacha’s Pajamas Theater Program.

Destiny Arts Pilots Pacha’s Pajamas Stage Program in May 2012
As the pilot performance in this program, nationally acclaimed youth theatre and dance troupe, Destiny Arts Center, is performing the Pacha’s Pajamas musical for their 2012 season.  Destiny chose Pacha’s Pajamas because the story addresses social issues core to the daily experience of youth they serve.

Destiny Arts was organized to reduce the isolation, prejudice and violence that young people in the East Bay experience. Destiny offers skills training to youth, ages 3 to 18, through after-school, weekend and summer programs at local schools and community centers with its main center located in Oakland, California.  Since 1993, Destiny has performed for audiences of over 25,000 annually.

With programs primarily serving low income youth, Destiny Arts functions as a forum for the youth during critical time in which they are exposed to violence and destructive lifestyle choices.  Destiny provides meaningful experiences in performing martial arts as well as practical skill building for self-defense and violence prevention.  Youth are encouraged to express themselves by developing their talents in singing, dancing, theater, arts & crafts and outdoor play.  They also participate in community–building performances, where teens are given the opportunity to co-create original performance art pieces in collaboration with professional artists.  This helps increase self-esteem, feelings of safety and self-worth, thereby inspiring youth to participate and be more involved in their school and community.

For the Pacha’s Pajamas show, Destiny added a section on asthma, an illness which severely impacts youth in West Oakland and the United States in general.  In the original Pacha’s Pajamas script, Pacha has an asthma attack as she walks home from school.  Destiny moved the scene to her parents’ apartment and augmented it with an informational skit providing asthma facts (see below).

Asthma Facts

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Asthma is a serious public health problem.

  • Almost 7 million U.S. children have asthma
  • Asthma prevalence is higher among poor families.
  • African Americans have high rates of asthma emergency department visits, hospitalizations and deaths than the general populace.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):

  • Asthma is one of the most common serious chronic diseases of childhood.
  • Asthma is the third-ranking cause of hospitalization among children under 15.
  • An average of one out of every 10 school-aged children has asthma.
  • 10.5 million school days are missed each year due to asthma.

The EPA also cites a number of environmental factors:

  • Indoor and outdoor environmental factors can trigger asthma attacks: dust mites, molds, cockroaches, pet dander, and secondhand smoke.
  • When ozone levels are high, more people have asthma attacks that require a doctor’s attention. Ozone also makes people more sensitive to asthma triggers such as pet dander, pollen, dust mites, and mold.

Almost exactly 20 years ago, a 12 year old girl named Severn Suzuki, silenced the world with a powerful message on behalf of children and the earth. In this transformative moment, world leaders were astounded by the wisdom, articulation and honesty of this child. the video has accumulated over 17 million Youtube views in four years.

Now now fast forward to 2012 … For the second time in 20 years, the UN is holding an Earth Summit in Rio to explore goals for sustainable development. According to the RIO + 20 website, “The Conference will focus on two themes: (a) a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and (b) the institutional framework for sustainable development.”

BALANCE Edutainment believes there needs to a strong cultural backbone to support the development of the green economy as well as checks and balances to make sure that the needs of people, communities and nature are addressed. We also think that the rights of Mother Earth need to be codified into international law, and seeing the vision of a children’s declaration on the rights of Mother Earth. We hope to be in Rio this June, supporting youth in expressing what they want for the planet and the future!  Please  VOTE for this video so we can win a trip to Rio for Earth Summit 2012!

Pacha is celebrating National Wildlife Week – March 19-25, 2012

National Wildlife Week was first observed in 1938 under the name “National Wildlife Restoration Week”. Past spokespeople of National Wildlife Week include Walt Disney, Shirley Temple, and Robert Redford. Through fun and informative hands-on activities for students, families and adults, this annual celebration educates, inspires and enlightens the public about wildlife conservation issues and encourages them to
become environmental stewards.

Founded in 1936, National Wildlife Federation’s mission is to inspire Americans to protect wildlife for our children’s future. The organization is currently developing programs to counteract today’s “indoor childhood” by encouraging parents and other caring adults to help children spend more time outdoors everyday discovering the wonders of nature. Fun outdoor activities can be found at www.beoutthere.org.

During National Wildlife Week, National Wildlife Federation is calling on young people ages 12 to 18 make a difference for wildlife in their communities. Through environmental service projects started during
National Wildlife Week, March 19-25, and continuing until National and Global Youth Service Day, April 22, teens will address how we can help wildlife in our communities. Tips and suggestions are available online
at www.nwf.org/nationalwildlifeweek.

Children of all ages are encouraged to participate in Wildlife Watch, March 19-25, 2012. Participants download a list of wildlife to observe in their backyards, neighborhoods, communities and other special
places. Observers also will be challenged to watch for designated endangered species in their locales. They will then report back by posting all their findings at www.nwf.org/wildlifewatch.

Pacha is so excited about National Wildlife Week that friend and green cartoonist Joe Mohr, drew an illustration of her with wildlife superhero David Mizejewski! David is is a naturalist, spokesperson and
media personality with National Wildlife Federation.

Youth Standing Up for Their Future at Earth Summit

As Earth Day 2012 approaches, it is important to shine a light on young heroes who spread the word about issues that affect all of us and our Mother Earth. Case in point, Severn Cullis-Suzuki’s 1992 speech at the United Nations Earth Summit conference in Rio de Janerio is not only inspirational and but highly relevant to our present day ecological circumstances.

In 1988, Severn founded the Environmental Children’s Organization, a group of 12-13 year olds promoting environmental sustainability and preservation. In 1992, at age 12, Cullis-Suzuki raised money with members of ECO to attend and participate in the Earth Summit conference 5,000 miles away from their home in Vancouver, Canada. Speaking from the conference floor, Severn was applauded by conference delegates for speaking about the adverse effects of pollution, deforestation, global poverty, growing socioeconomic disparities, and the mass extinction of animal and plants species.

Subsequently posted to YouTube on April 18, 2008, The Girl Who Silenced the World for 5 minutes became a viral hit, accumulating over 16 million views. Numerous YouTubers remixed the video, incorporating music and photo montages to complement Severn’s points. While very few people knew about Severn’s speech until recently, this video now serves to inspire and inform youth twenty years after the fact.

In one of the more powerful moments, Severn talks about not being able to go fishing with father because the fish contain cancer and toxins. Drawing upon her encounters with street children in Rio, she addresses the growing socioeconomic gap between the rich and poor. Her speech denounces the UN’s inaction and counterproductive actions that further undercut environmental sustainability: “If you don’t know how to fix it, please, stop breaking it.” She notes that we do not hold those that strip the environment of its nutrients accountable, and that man-made disasters such as large oil spills occur every day, killing animals and polluting the water. Framing the issue as preserving the environment for the next generation of children, Severn reminds us about the far-reaching consequences of our actions and inaction.

An Emerging Environmental Hero

Now, twenty years later, young environmental activists are continuing where Severn’s speech left off. Ta’Kaiya Blaney, 10, is a singer-songwriter, actress, speaker and activist. She co-wrote and sang “Shallow Waters”, a song about the dangers of oil spills to marine and coastal life in an effort to stop a proposed oil pipeline from the Alberta Tar Sands to the British Columbia coast. The song was a semi-finalist in the 2010 David Suzuki Songwriting Contest, Playlist for the Planet, which was named after Severn’s father.

Like Severn, Ta’Kaiya draws upon personal observations and experience to illustrate how life forms are disappearing before our eyes. The Shallow Waters music video showcases her immense talent and deep personal connection with nature. Ta’Kaiya speaks at workshops and universities across Canada to inspire youth to proactively campaign for environmental and social justice. As one of the twenty “We Canada” Champions, she will be speaking at the UN Earth Summit 2012 in Rio De Janiero from June 20-22.

Ta’kaiya also appears on the forthcoming Pacha’s Pajamas album along with the Agape Youth Choir and six other socially conscious youth. It’s amazing to see socially conscious youth collaborating to raise awareness and inspire action on behalf of their and future generations.

Send Ta’Kaiya to Earth Summit 2012

Ta’Kaiya is raising funds for her trip to Earth Summit 2012 in Rio De Janiero. As a media child reporter, she hopes to interview leaders and representatives around the world while representing indigenous organizations. She will also sing and speak at forums. We at BALANCE Films are supporting her efforts to raise funds.  If you know of any foundations, organizations or individuals who may be interested in sponsoring Ta’Kaiya’s trip to Earth Summit 2012, please contact info@takaiyablaney.com.

Debate Surrounding KONY 2012

Currently, the most popular video among youth is KONY 2012, a campaign video produced and released by the Invisible Children organization to make Joseph Kony – leader of the Lord Resistance Army (LRA), a Ugandan rebel group – famous. Kony and his army have abducted children, forcing boys to become child soldiers and girls to work as sex slaves for 26 years. During his thirty year reign, Kony has been responsible for the mutilation and murder of many Ugandans. According to the video, 99 percent of the planet does not know who Kony is despite being the first leader indicted by the International Criminal Court in the Hague.

The Invisible Children project began when filmmaker Jason Russell and his colleagues made a documentary film of their encounters with several Ugandan children facing risk of abduction and murder from Kony’s cronies. Their campaign to spread awareness of Kony’s atrocities developed into a powerful grassroots movement, largely powered by young people. With each member donating a few dollars, Invisible Children was able to rebuild schools, create jobs and build a radio network to warn villages of imminent rebel attacks. While the U.S. government initially resisted involvement (because it did not concern them politically or financially), Washington policy makers started to pay attention once Invisible Children started gaining support from their colleagues and constituents. As a result, President Obama deployed a small number of U.S. forces to the central African nation to assist Ugandan forces in apprehending Joseph Kony.

To make sure the U.S. forces stay in Uganda and complete their mission, Invisible Children is intensifying their campaign this year as embodied and explained in the film. This entails targeting 20 public figures and 12 policy makers who can spread awareness and wield sufficient influence to keep the spotlight on Kony and Uganda. They will distribute yard stickers, bracelets, posters, and the action kit. They hope this movie will circulate among the virtual community to enlighten and empower individuals to stand up for what is right. One of the most powerful ideas is that social media, particularly Facebook and YouTube, links 750 million people in constant dialogue, transcending national boundaries. People can come together and change history.

But we don’t want to give away the entire film; we think its worth checking out for a couple reasons. First, its great example of using viral videos for activism.  Two, this is what youth are watching on Youtube right now. The Kony 2012 video has already accumulated over 80 Million views. It was first viewed on a mobile device, and subsequently shared through Facebook and Twitter.

If this campaign succeeds, it could set a precedent for holding human rights violators accountable. Indeed, media can be used to educate and unite people like never before. and exert enough pressure on the policy makers to create social change not just in our backyard but also on behalf of nations that may lack the means to do so themselves.

In response to this very well-produced film, other people have questioned the validity of its claims. In this counterpoint video, a young woman of Ugandan heritage suggests that the Kony situation is being blown out of proportion — she purports the problem surrounding Kony is not even relevant anymore and certainly less serious than the repression going on Syria at the moment. Drawing upon familial anecdotes and news articles, she mentions the possibility that Kony and his troops fled northern Uganda six years ago and are in neighboring countries. In this contest, she questions the value of deploying U.S. soldiers in Uganda. She also encourages viewers to examine if and how Invisible Children are benefiting from this campaign. According to her research, Invisible Children takes in 13 million dollars a year and only 31% of the revenues goes to the cause. Whether one agrees or not, she brings up an excellent point: that people should educate themselves on the subject matter and the organization before offering support to any campaign. It’s important to consider whether these issues are still relevant and significant, and how exactly contributions will forward the cause. This digital op-ed has already accumulated 3,046,403 views.

And she is not the only video blogger asking people to reevaluate their support for Kony 2012. There are other v-loggers encouraging viewers to educate themselves on the situation in Uganda before donating or actively campaigning for the cause. Refusing to take any sides, this young man proposes that people educate themselves before committing to any sort of campaign. People in Uganda have also protested against this video for similar reasons, stating that Kony’s reign of terror is no longer relevant to their current political and social climate, and the footage in their video may be outdated.

Along similar lines, an Colorlines article  speaks to Kony 2012′s portrayal of Africans as victims whose only hope lay in the actions — and wallets — of white saviors.

Melia to Selena: Get with Pacha’s Pajamas

(Jan 21, 2011 Selenation) Following the advice of our spokesperson Melia, Balance Edutainment has launched a campaign to recruit singer, actress and philanthropist Selena Gomez to participate in Pacha’s Pajamas.  Pacha is a little girl who becomes a Superhero for Nature through her dreams.  We want Selena to be a voice on the album and the edutainment app, Nature Superhero.

We are reaching out to @SelenaGomez and her fans on Twitter. Please follow @RecruitSelena to join our campaign. After just 24 hours, we have over 200 followers. (A shout out to all our followers – thank you so much for your support!)

Melia’s Brainchild

It all started eight days ago when Melia asked her papa to video tape her.  Papa had no idea what she was going to say.  Below is what came out.

Pacha’s Pajamas is the story of young person who discovers her voice and uses it for good. The story teaches young people that they can become superheroes in their communities. We need more superheroes.

At a time when animals and plants are going extinct at the fastest rate in 65 million years, Pacha’s story also teaches kids about our interdependence with nature, cooperation and collective liberation.  We see Pacha’s Pajamas inspiring millions of children to take a stand for issues they feel passionate about. (Our Kidstarter initiative will support youth in building an audience and crowdfunding selected projects.)

Who’s Already Onboard?

High profile conscious artists such as Mos Def and Talib Kweli are bringing their vocal and musical talents to our musical EP, forthcoming album and app. Our music also features talented child musicians and emcees from our nationwide auditions.

Why Selena?

As the youngest UNICEF ambassador, Selena has consistently demonstrated her commitment to furthering the education, development and leadership of youth throughout the world. She has given back to local and global communities in need. In 2009, Selena traveled to Ghana to meet children who lack access to clean water, nourishment, education and health care. In 2011, she helped raise funds for clean water and sanitation programs. Just two nights ago, she performed at the 2012 Charity Concert at the House of Blues. She is an inspiration and a wonderful role model for children around the world.

Selena has been a pioneer in employing technology to not only communicate with her fans but also to practice and publicize eco-friendly alternatives. She has championed the use of technology for eco-friendly causes, such as the app, Postcard on the Run, which encourages people to produce and personalize their own postcards on recycled paper. Her fashion line, Dream Out Loud, consists of recycled or eco-friendly materials.

Like Selena’s collaborative single, “Send it On” (Disney’s Friends For Change), Pacha’s Pajamas uses music to reach and inspire young people to take a stand, in this case for the natural world. A portion of the proceeds from Pacha’s Pajamas will go towards the environmental education of youth and protecting the environment.

We envision Selena voicing the part of Hummingbird — a messenger that disseminates healing, joy, and sweetness among different worlds — or if she is really excited about the story, Pacha.

How You Can Help

Please follow @RecruitSelena to join our campaign.  Retweet our tweets and tweet @selenagomez letting her know that you’d love to see her in @PachasPajamas.

If You Know Selena
