Youthtube Trends: Capturing “Youtube” Moments

Jennifer Serravello, teacher and staff developer, created the Independent Reading Assessment to determine whether students are truly comprehending what they read during SSR (Silent Sustained Reading.) This video is trending #6 among all 13-17 year olds and #4 among 13-17 year old girls, with 241,372 views. While more assessments would be helpful in gauging students’ level of reading comprehension, the video leaves us with so many questions. For example, what exactly does this assessment consist of? It is supposedly built on three principles: Assess, Evaluate, and Teach. These, however, are rather vague and unhelpful in understanding what the methods of assessment will be. Furthermore, what kinds of solutions can we implement to help students bolster their reading comprehension skills? Perhaps this is too much to cover in a 1:46 video, but this video felt more like a teaser and not really an overview.

Today’s lesson is to make sure to have your camera on you at all times in case you witness odd incidents. Currently the #1 trending video among 13-17 year olds, especially boys, features a swanky yellow Lamborghini swerving to the left and crashing in between cars. It was sandwiched between two other cars. One can hear the creators of the video saying, “This is going to be on Youtube.” Now, photos are sometimes inadequate to capture the full experience–we need an entire visual capture of what we really happened. We are just so eager to share funny moments not only with our closest friends and family members but also with the online community; humor and upscale cars are universal sources of entertainment.

While I always thought this song was a hit with teenybopper girls, apparently it’s catchy enough for the guys as well. The Harvard Baseball team lip-synced and danced in perfect unison to Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe.” It has accumulated 7,005,369 hits, #1 among the girls and #3 among the 13-17 year old population.

Trending #2 is the Bungee Jump Prank with 1,106,544 views. A group of friends brought a future bridegroom blindfolded and told him that he would jump from 50 feet above water. Of course, that 50 feet turned out to be only 3 feet. Ten years, who would have thought that funny bachelor party moments would be disseminated across the web?

Adding to the outrageous week is a clip of a 40 pound barracuda jumping into a fishing boat. While filming for the fishing show, “Tails From the Outdoors Show,” the crew caught a silver barracuda that flopped around the boat. This video has been watched 1,579,312 times.

Lastly, I would highly recommend this 18-year-old’s acoustic cover of LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It. He brings a intense, soulful, and bluesy tone absent from the loud and goofy original. With 55,602,794 views, it’s trending #7 among all 13-17 year olds and the girls.

Melia’s Papa on Work

So I was having this conversation with a new friend and she says:

What do you do? I hate to ask b/c I tend not to start off inquiring about one’s job, but it seems like a passion for you as well.

Here’s how I answered:

I hear you about the work conversation. For me, its like the where-you-went-to-school (meaning college) conversation. And your intuition is right on! I’m passionate about being in creative & collective service, and need to be speaking more about my work for multiple reasons. I’m passionate about the still innocent generations already here and too come, as well as about a creative evolution of our world led by humanity, perhaps with nature nipping at its ankles. Over the years my appreciation for story, music and social entrepreneurship has grown steadily. Somehow I seem to have wrapped it all up into the cohesive package that I refer to as my life’s work. I hesitate to speak to where this work could go, for several reasons. At the moment, it’s apps, music, books and live shows with many exciting possibilities waiting for nourishment. I will also say that I see a path where this work positively impacts children and families worldwide, thereby creating the conditions for them to help shape humanity’s evolving relationship with Earth. Of course, it is not the only path. Suffice to say, one of the main limiting factors for us “going spiral” has been financing and this issue appears to be steadily improving. Thanks for Prompting a blog post :-)

The following ideas from above give me energy:

  • The notion of still innocent generations, already hear and to come
  • An image of a creative evolution of our universe led by humanity with nature nipping at its ankles and path that rights our relationship with nature
  • Caroline Casey’s idea about “going spiral.”

Something to Chew On

Might the distinguishing factor between “going spiral” and “going viral”  be the extent to which the content supports and reinforces life preserving stories?

How Educators Can Utilize YouTube as a Teaching Tool

Teaching conventions continue to change. In the late 90s, computers were the fad. In the early 2000s, multimedia devices and websites became the norm. Most educators seem weary of trusting an entertainment website such as YouTube as the next big educator tool for helping teach children.

Despite the social media’s functionality as an entertainment source, YouTube plays host to a bevy of movies and small clips regarding math, English and science topics. As an educator, you can easily integrate these small, 10-minute clips into a lesson plan. All you have to do is look carefully, be selective and discover the educational value of a clip.

Math Lesson

Ever notice how students often ask, “when, if ever, are we going to use this in real life?”  YouTube can be your rebuttal. With multiple examples from online educators, YouTube can help showcase what the math lesson can do in the everyday world of an engineer, astrophysicist or doctor.

Simple correlations may help students appreciate the importance of a lesson, but teachers need educational value out of a video. If you find students are having difficulty with one teaching style, YouTube videos can expose you to new ideas and styles to integrate into a lesson plan. These videos are like digital online classes that expose both teacher and student to different methods and examples.

The trigonometry lesson your students found difficult can be simplified by watching a different instructor via YouTube. The lesson plan on fractions can be altered by the inspiration of a video, while the topic on integers can be reinforced with a quick video.

English Lesson

Going over basic grammar lessons or discussing your latest book topic may seem boring to some students. Instead, you can supplement your lesson by watching a fun, entertaining video lessons. Schoolhouse Rock videos were once a popular educational videos for teaching English lessons in the 80s and 90s. Since the evolution of technology, VHS tapes are not common anymore, but an Internet connection with YouTube is.

Say you have an English project due. You can have your students produce, edit and upload a video onto YouTube to allow students to portray a particular scene in a book, discuss a topic or raise awareness about an issue. As a teacher, you can use YouTube as a social medium used for allowing students to express creativity. Granted, you will need to offer guidelines to ensure students stay within the limitation of the assignment, but still, YouTube makes for the perfect merger to express creativity and showcase a student’s understanding of a topic or issue.

Educational Clips

Amateur and professional filmmakers often use YouTube to upload clips of a documentary or issue. Scientists often post findings and evidence on YouTube to help expose collogues to news and information. You can do a quick search and locate educational videos that relate to your lesson plan and help further reinforce an idea or concept. If you are a professor for an online university, you can make a video to discuss a particular subject or lesson to share with students.

Educational videos make for great multimedia tools to supplement a dense less, explain a topic or reiterate your previous lesson. Some videos are quick; others offer a bit more depth. Regardless of the length and scope, most videos offer a healthy dose of resources and information.

The mentioned information offers just a snippet of ways you can integrate YouTube into an educational setting. You can find dozens of other ways to help educated yourself as well as your students on a topic. Before using YouTube, you may want to ask department heads if it is okay and any concerns he or she might have about using the outlet. Most educators will be okay with using YouTube so long as the clip does not steer too far from the topic or lesson.

Crowdsourced Storytelling For The Modern Children’s Stage

As part of the One Million Dreamers program, BALANCE Edutainment and BALANCE Films are making the Pacha’s Pajamas musical script available to community theaters and schools worldwide. Performing groups are encouraged to adapt the script for their community by incorporating content to their communities and to crowdsource their own Pacha Jamma festival, where performers — from their group, the community and/or audience speak — sing or dance from a Nature’s EyeTM perspective.  The script is available royalty free to qualified educational programs, theater companies and clubs through June 21, 2013.  The first performing group in each region will be highlighted. For more information, contact stage@pachaspajamas.com or visit the Pacha’s Pajamas Theater Program.

Destiny Arts Pilots Pacha’s Pajamas Stage Program in May 2012
As the pilot performance in this program, nationally acclaimed youth theatre and dance troupe, Destiny Arts Center, is performing the Pacha’s Pajamas musical for their 2012 season.  Destiny chose Pacha’s Pajamas because the story addresses social issues core to the daily experience of youth they serve.

Destiny Arts was organized to reduce the isolation, prejudice and violence that young people in the East Bay experience. Destiny offers skills training to youth, ages 3 to 18, through after-school, weekend and summer programs at local schools and community centers with its main center located in Oakland, California.  Since 1993, Destiny has performed for audiences of over 25,000 annually.

With programs primarily serving low income youth, Destiny Arts functions as a forum for the youth during critical time in which they are exposed to violence and destructive lifestyle choices.  Destiny provides meaningful experiences in performing martial arts as well as practical skill building for self-defense and violence prevention.  Youth are encouraged to express themselves by developing their talents in singing, dancing, theater, arts & crafts and outdoor play.  They also participate in community–building performances, where teens are given the opportunity to co-create original performance art pieces in collaboration with professional artists.  This helps increase self-esteem, feelings of safety and self-worth, thereby inspiring youth to participate and be more involved in their school and community.

For the Pacha’s Pajamas show, Destiny added a section on asthma, an illness which severely impacts youth in West Oakland and the United States in general.  In the original Pacha’s Pajamas script, Pacha has an asthma attack as she walks home from school.  Destiny moved the scene to her parents’ apartment and augmented it with an informational skit providing asthma facts (see below).

Asthma Facts

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Asthma is a serious public health problem.

  • Almost 7 million U.S. children have asthma
  • Asthma prevalence is higher among poor families.
  • African Americans have high rates of asthma emergency department visits, hospitalizations and deaths than the general populace.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):

  • Asthma is one of the most common serious chronic diseases of childhood.
  • Asthma is the third-ranking cause of hospitalization among children under 15.
  • An average of one out of every 10 school-aged children has asthma.
  • 10.5 million school days are missed each year due to asthma.

The EPA also cites a number of environmental factors:

  • Indoor and outdoor environmental factors can trigger asthma attacks: dust mites, molds, cockroaches, pet dander, and secondhand smoke.
  • When ozone levels are high, more people have asthma attacks that require a doctor’s attention. Ozone also makes people more sensitive to asthma triggers such as pet dander, pollen, dust mites, and mold.

Youthtube Trends: A Concerned Parent Appeals to the Online Community

Currently the number one trending video, with 2,096,676 views and counting, features the story of Akian, a ten year old boy who has Autism. His father, Stuart Chaifetz, appeals to the Youtube community to pass legislation so that teachers who bully children are immediately fired. After unproductive and unhelpful meetings with the IEP team (the teacher, school social worker, occupational therapist, and a speech teacher), Mr. Chaifetz took the matter in his own hands by placing a wire on his son. After listening to the audio, he discovered that Akian’s teacher and an aide were discussing inappropriate subjects in front the children and specifically bullying Akian. In this rather long clip (17 minutes and 3 seconds), Mr. Chaifetz introduces sound bites and even transcripts of conversations between Akian, the teacher and the aide. After he released this footage, the aide was fired, and the teacher was moved to another school.

Mr. Chaifetz has created a petition on Change.org urging the New Jersey Legislature and Congress to punish and fire such abusive teachers. He explains, “No child should have to suffer humiliation at the hands of the people who are supposed to protect them. When a teacher bullies a child, especially one with Special Needs, they need to be immediately fired. No excuses. No second chances. No more teacher/bullies.” So far, this petition has received 106,093 signatures. Some of the people who have signed the petition purport to have been or known people who were victims of bullying at the same school district, Cherry Hill. Mr. Chaifetz is appealing to the online community through Youtube and Change.org to make sure these teachers do not ever step foot in a classroom. His video has sparked outrage, empathy and immense support among viewers.

The very people who were supposed to protect these students took advantage of their special needs (as these students would not be able to tell their parents what happened at school) and humiliated them for their differences. Teachers are supposed to provide academic and emotional support for their students, and if they cannot handle the day-to-day stresses of their jobs, they need to quit.

Apart from the above video, the top trending videos don’t seem too controversial. Trending second, this home video with 45,075 views features a man who makes a basketball shot during a forward flip from afar. In addition to becoming a place to flaunt personal skills and achievements, Youtube is also a place to share excellent plays and blunders. In the ninth most trending video (with 933,048 views), Latvian basketball player Armands Skele makes a fantastic shot fourteen seconds into the clip. Of course, that comes with sharing embarrassing moments, such as Terrence Jones running over a Louisville cheerleader while pursuing the ball. This video ranks sixth, with 1,129,447 views.

The #3 Trending video purports to promote gender equality with an attractive woman shedding her fashion accoutrements, donning stylish riding leathers and zooming through the city on a super-charged motorcycle. She is “setting the record straight” that she can handle a bike as well as any one. Metaphorically, T-Mobile is inviting women to test drive America’s Largest 4-G Network.

In the #4 Trending video, the guy with a faux Russian accent is back again to promote some of his newest and baddest weapons. The #5 Trending video consists of a goofball parody of the One Directions’ song, “What Makes You Beautiful.”

Play and the Toddler’s Brain On Television

Play and the Toddler’s Brain On Television

By: Maria Lourdes Sionzon-Bott

Dimitri Christakis is a pediatrician and the Director of the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development in Seattle Children’s Research Institute.  He specializes in early childhood development, and whose influential findings are helping identify optimal media exposure for children.

Dimitri Christakis details his private research in the TED talk

The typical newborn brain actually weighs 333 grams and in the first two years of life it triples its original weight and grows to be 999 grams.  Brain growth over the lifespan shows that the brain grows very steeply over the first two years and continuous to progress until the age 20 and then slowly regresses by age 56.

Every human being is born with a lifetime supply of brain cells and neurons and it’s the connection between the brains cells called synapses are the ones that actually accounts for the brain growth development.  These synapses form based on early experiences which fine tuned the mind to the world that surrounds the individual himself.

Below is an illustration on how the brain cells and neurons are connected by synapses.  As you can see at birth the human brain is born with 2,500 synapses; by age 3 the brain has developed with 15,000 synapses and overtime those connections are actually pruned in response to the external stimulation – the external world that the individual lives in.

Another example of how our brain works early in life is the breathing of a one day old infant listening to classical music; this shows that as early as the first day of life, there is a discernable psychological reaction to what actually babies hears.

Based on research from decades ago, we all know and are made aware that too little stimulation is bad for brain development.  Below are two PET scans; PET scans are measures of the brain function; the brighter color shows more brain activity.  On the left is a PET scan of a normal kindergarten and on the right is a PET scan of a child raised in a horribly neglected environment. As shown on the right diagram, there are areas of the child’s brain that shows no activity, and that his brain did not develop because there is almost no stimulation at all.

But, is there also a possibility of over-stimulating the brain?  In which the brain is inappropriately stimulated which results to instead of being beneficial, can actually be harmful.

This is a very important issue because we are in this stage of technologizing childhood these days, in a way which it is already un-presidented.  The average child who is exposed to television in the 1970’s is four years old as opposed to the children of these times who are exposed to television as early as four months old.

Research shows that prolonged exposure to television results to rapid image change in the brain during the critical period of development.  This develops a precondition mind which in turns expects high levels of stimulation resulting to inattention later in life.

Studies  shows that if by the age of 3 and a child is exposed to more television time which takes up to 40% of the child’s waking hours than cognitive stimulation ; it is more likely that by age of 7 years old the child will more likely to have attention problems.  For every hour that the child watches television by age 3 there is a 10% chance that the child will have attention problem by school age.

Whereas, a child exposed to more cognitive stimulation by age 3 than television exposure; will have lesser the chance of likely to have attention problems later in life.  In fact for every hour that the child is exposed to cognitive stimulation, reduce the chance of having attention problems later in life by 30%.

Therefore, studies and research shows that there are certain things that the child is exposed early on his life that increase the chance to enhance their ability to pay attention; and there are certain things that they are exposed early on that actually impedes them.

In another experiment where children is exposed to slow paced educational films such as Mr. Rogers, studies show that children who watch educational films shows no risk of attention problems compared to children exposed to faced paced entertainment films such as cartoons like The Power Puff Girls, shows that the risk of having attention problems by their school age is increased by 60% and increase more as much as 110% if exposed to more violent films.

Dr. Dimitri Christakis has been experimenting with building a mouse model of television viewing wherein starting at 10 days of life mice were being exposed to lights and sound stimulations 6 hours daily for 42 days.

After 10 days these mice were tested for a series of tests; the first one measures the mice activity for Risk Taking using the Open Field test.  There are two competing instinct that mice have, one is to avoid being in the middle of the open field because it is too risky; and they have the other competing instinct to forge for food, so at some point it has to go in the middle and take the risk to explore their environment.

The diagram below shows the mouse movements, notice the diagram on the left shows that the normal mouse spends most of its time around the perimeter.  On the other hand, the one on the right shows how much time the mouse stays in the middle and at the same time shows how much general activity it does within the perimeter; this just shows a very hyperactive and a risk taking mouse.

The diagram below shows a graph of the Open Field Overstimulation result of how much time the over stimulated mouse spends his time in the center and how often it enters the center; compared to the mouse which wasn’t exposed to lights and sound stimulations 6 hours daily for 42 days.

Another test done is the Novel Object Recognition which tests short-term memory and learning.

In this test a mouse is placed in a box with two objects and the mouse will explore both and “get-to-know” the objects.  Then the mouse will be taken out of the box and an hour later, a novel object will placed in the box with another object.  The diagram below shows how much time the mouse spends in each object.  The mouse which is learning will spend more time with the novel object as opposed to the diagram on the right where the mouse spends the same amount of time with both objects.

The result shows that the control mouse or the normal mouse spends 75% of the time with the novel object; whereas the over stimulated mouse spends the same amount of time with both objects as if the mouse can’t distinguish which object is the novel object which shows that the mouse is not learning and they are not acting like normal mouse.

The Building Block Study was done in a randomized trial at the low income Seattle clinic with 200 kids ages 18 to 24 months and where half of the kids were given blocks at the beginning of the study and the other half were given blocks at the end.  Their parents were given “Bloctivities” these are ways to play with their children using blocks.

The diagram below shows that children who received the blocks initially played with the blocks 59% of the time on a typical day.  Whereas, the children who received the blocks later and played only 13% of the time on a typical day.

The diagram below shows that the children who played 59% of the time on a typical day spends 20 minutes per day with 1.4 episodes per day and with that 65% of the time was spent playing blocks with their parents.

Six months later, these children’s language were assessed and shows that of these children who received the blocks late scored 42% below average.  Children who received the blocks early scored 56% percentile significantly better and slightly above average.  Thus, promoting interactive play early in life does promote language development on children.

In conclusion, early childhood is very important to children (and for mice) and is very critical to their development.  The need for more real time play is vitally important for the children in our time today and they should be exposed to less fast-paced media.

When we change the beginning of the story, then we change the whole story!

Youthtube Trends: Experimentation, Physical Fitness, and Profanity

Paths of Experimentation

The Mona Lisa Make-Up Transformation is one of the coolest viral make-up instruction videos. It’s amazing to witness how she manages to transform into this iconic figure. This Youtube make-up artist became popular with her video on how to look like Drake. Trending #1 among 13-17 year olds and girls, it has accumulated 568,280 views.

Youtube also sometimes feels like an open science fair. This video shows how controlling the tone of a sine wave can influence the movement of flowing water, causing it to slow down, quicken, and even move backwards. This may be due to the constraints of the human eye. Trending #1 among 13-17 year old boys and #4 among all 13-17 year olds, this has already accumulated 106,152 hits within a day.

Working Out: A Keystone of Masculinity

There’s nothing we love more than lampooning ridiculous caricatures. Dontbethatguyvids premiered their newest addition, “Don’t Be That Guy at the Gym.” Most of these guys are obnoxious amplifications of what we’ve seen before at the gym. They include the “noobs,” the “coach,” the “meathead,” and the “face.” Rather than delineating the best choice of option, it’s sometimes funnier and easier to talk about what NOT to do. It is currently the #3 trending video among 13-17 year old boys and #8 among girls, with 150,230 views.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3tlmRIFR4s

But speaking of 30-something year olds embarrassing themselves at the gym, one home video features an extremely athletic nine-month year old child who does pull ups with a desk. Perhaps athletic ability and physical witness is largely determined at an early age. It is currently the #4 video among guys and #10 among all 13-17 year olds.

Profanity in an Insincere Context

Jenna Marbles released a profane half-rap, half-sung video on rejecting “adult” responsibilities. She touches on the usual aspects, such as paying taxes and bills, cleaning her house, and cooking for herself, but also lampoons herself as a woman who just does not want to grow up. She still prefers to drink wine and lounge around instead of getting married and having a family. This probably resonates with a lot of teens’ anxieties about growing up and learning how to live on their own. Trending #6 among 13-17 year old girls, it has accumulated 3,679,178 views since last Wednesday.

Maroon 5’s lyric video of “Payphone” resembles a moving comic strip with a snarky and bitter protagonist who closely resembles the lead singer, Adam Levine. We penetrate the characters’ inner thoughts, as each thought cloud features a unique set of lyrics. Maroon 5’s songs often exude melodrama with some key insertions of profanity in their chorus. It is trending #9 among all 13-17 year olds and #5 among girls of that age.

Youthtube Trends: Hooked on Pop Culture

Perhaps it’s just the season, but four out of ten trending videos among 13-17 year old males pertain to basketball. Two of these clips (trending #8 with 348,310 views and #10 with 149,807 views) spotlight Vince Carter’s plays, and one clip (trending #6 with 91,612 views) captures Andrew Bynum saying in an interview, “I shot the ball like s**t man.” While users concede that Bynum is very talented, most of them also suggest that he should be professional and not swear during interviews. The #3 trending video features the UNC Basketball team casually shooting hoops with students and fans.

As one commenter remarked, this may be the fastest growing video since KONY 2012, except it is an explicit marketing campaign for the television station, TNT. While this has obviously been scripted, it’s an interesting advertisement. TNT placed a small red button in the middle of a Flemish town with an sign pointing to it labeled, “Push for more drama.” After one brave soul pushed button, all the craziest plot devices came to life, such as an ambulance truck with a stretcher, a random fistfight, crazy car tricks, a police shooting, and more. Even though it was just launched on April 11, it has already received 8,120,218 views and is the #1 trending video among 13-17 year old boys and girls.

Although April Fools has already passed, it’s never too late to formulate practical jokes, as Quirkology illustrates in “10 Amazing Practical Jokes.” Seriously, Youtube doesn’t just have how-to videos on hair and make-up. As the #3 Trending video currently, it has been viewed 343,357 times.

The #1 trending video among 13-17 year olds yesterday showed an old man in a nursing home who reacts so strongly and positively to music from his era. Music has a way of speaking to him like no other person. This moving clip attests to the phenomenal healing powers of music that can touch us at any age or point in our lives. Currently, it’s the 7th most viewed video among 13-17 year olds, with 3,174,700 views.

Youtube is the ideal place to artistically flaunt your inner geek. In “Jedi Grandma,” AndrewMFilms presents the consequences of provoking a nice old lady watering her plants. Trending #9 among 13-17 year old males, it’s received 127,245 hits in the last two days.

13-17 year old girls seem to be absorbing pop culture, tuning into Nicki Minaj (#3 with 10,877,254 views), Jennifer Lopez (#5 with 17,500,862 views), Marilyn Manson (#6 with 54,348 views), Jessie J (#7 with 3,533,987 views), and Glee’s newest cover of “Somebody That I Used to Know” (#9 with 5,836,499 views). They are also anticipating the release of “LOL,” in which Miley Cyrus stars as a rebellious teenager defying her concerned mom, played by Demi Moore.
