What is Transformation Entertainment?

The other day I picked the 2012 issue of Common Ground magazine, and the first large ad was for a Transformational Story conference, February 4, 2012 in Los Angeles. It caught my attention because Aaron and I have been deep in the storytelling world for several years now.  While we enjoy stories in general, given the time we live in, our focus has been stories that teach, stories of change and growth, stories that support the shift that is already occurring.  Our focus is transformational stories and especially those that are magnetic for young people.

The event is produced by GATE, the Global Alliance of Transformational Entertainment, which was founded by John Raatz in 2009 and now opening up to membership at the February event. Jim Carrey and other celebrities have been on board since the beginning.

GATE is an evolving community of creative, business and technical professionals in entertainment, media, and the arts, who realize the vital and expanding role media and entertainment play in creating our lives, and who aspire to consciously transform those domains for the benefit of all.

GATE is a nonprofit 501c(6) membership trade association providing valuable and relevant knowledge, resources and services to a wide range of professionals in the media, entertainment and arts industries, to aid in their personal transformation and to help them create and distribute content that expresses their transformational worldview.

BALANCE Edutainment is all about transformational entertainment.  We are using story, music and celebrity to encourage kids to become superheros in their community.  We have been looking for a means to distinguish our work from what Sesame Street does. We see our work as being within a cultural context that in the process of shifting and as supporting the shift to a higher level of collective consciousness.  Our content generally helps its audience better understand and navigate relationships with one self, others and nature.

Butterflies are Beautiful

I like butterflies.  One of the songs on our new Pacha’s Pajamas: A Musical Story Written By Nature EP features master lyricist Talib Kweli rapping from the perspective of a butterfly. The butterfly is often offered as a metaphor for how human society among other things could evolve. Thinking in this context, Bucky Fuller’s words comfort me “There is nothing in the caterpillar that tells you its going to be a butterfly.” Perhaps there is hope for us after all even if I don’t always see it.

If you are interested in learning more about the transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly, check out the metamorphosis lessson at Butterfly School. Prior to entering the chrysalis, the caterpillar pigs out, consuming many times its body weight in food (leaves and fruit). The type of plant they eat depends on the species of caterpillar; many species will only eat one type of plant their entire lives.  After five stages of molting (i.e., shedding their old skin to reveal their new larger skin), the caterpillar sheds its skin once more only to find itself within its chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar loses its form. New and different cells begin to appear. They are called imaginal cells. They resonate at a different frequency from the caterpillar cells. The immune system of the caterpillar attacks the new cells, but the new cells continue to appear in an accelerating rate, eventually overwhelming the caterpillar’s immune system.  The new cells begin to form groups, which resonate at a different frequency. The groups continue growing an expanding until at one point the former caterpillar realizes it is a butterfly.

The metaphor relates people to imaginal cells.  Yes, you probably are an imaginal cell if you are reading this.  Groups of change agents are then groups of imaginal cells.  Since I first heard the metaphor, I have been thinking about what the analog for “a group of imaginal cells resonating at a different frequency” might be.

One way to think about it is that the human analog of the imaginal cells resonance is our guiding story (or worldview).  We appear different to the System if our guiding story about who we are are, how we got here and where we are going is different from the norm. To the extent that our guiding story manifests differently than others, the System attempts to suppress what it sees as troubling aspects of us. The human analog for groups of imaginal cells is then people coming together around a common story, creating a group of change agents that share a common narrative, a new story for humanity.

We are looking forward to meeting and crafting new stories with our imaginal sisters and brothers in the GATE community.

Talib Kweli drops Mad Science as a Butterfly on Kid Hop album

“I float like a butterfly and I sting like a bee”
~ Muhammad Ali

BALANCE Edutainment is proud to announce that conscious hip-hop pioneer Talib Kweli recently recorded a song for their EP Pacha’s Pajamas: A Musical Story Written By Nature. (Available through our Loudsauce campaign with a contribution until Dec. 16th. Thereafter, the EP is available at Pacha’s Store.) We are excited about working with Kweli because he uses music as a platform for social change. Kweli is known for being a master lyricist and partner with Mos Def on the influential hip-hop duo Black Star.

From Wikipedia:
Kweli responded to Jay-Z’s 2003 record “Moment of Clarity” (on The Black Album, in which Jay-Z rapped: “If skills sold, truth be told/I’d probably be, lyrically, Talib Kweli”) in his own track “Ghetto Show” by stating “If lyrics sold then truth be told/I’d probably be just as rich and famous as Jay Z.”

Pacha’s Pajamas helps young people learn about their relationships with other species and ecosystems and more fully appreciate Nature. Pacha herself is a big dreamer. One night, the animals and plants on her new pajamas come to life. Entering her dream as a little gorilla, she comes upon an unlikely group of creatures, all feeling upset about the state of the world. They decide to throw the greatest nature festival on Earth. Species unite to bring balance to the planet. Fun-filled acts include an insect band called The Beetles, a rapping black-eyed pea and a beaver named Just-in-Time, performing for a better world.

On the soundtrack, Kweli provides the voice of pivotal character Pebble, the first creature to support the idea of a Nature Festival. When we heard Kweli was interested, we expanded the role of Pebble and gave him some lines we knew he would “rock.”  Speaking to Tree and Whale, respectively:

The rough and tough Pebble cracked, “Since when are you two scared of standing up for something you believe in or diving deep for what you love? I’m with Mushroom on this. Everything CAN change! I was once a huge boulder, now I’m just a small stone. Someday, I’ll be sand! Together, we can move mountains. It may be hard, but I’m ready to rock, ya’ll!”

Kweli also drops mad science on a song called Butterfly Life on the soundtrack. Most of the songs on the soundtrack are from a Nature’s Eye View. Kweli’s song is from a butterfly’s perspective. Of course, the lyrics are clever and delivered masterfully. The song also delivers a short science lesson about butterflies and caterpillars, including their transformation, the number of legs and eyes, what they eat and their various forms. Kweli wrote and performed the song in less than 3 hours.

In the Studio

After greetings at the studio, we sat down with Kweli, explained the character Pebble and what the butterfly song is all about. Kweli asked us to write down any key messages that we wanted in the song. He then peeped the Wikipedia butterfly page and listened to BALANCE’s Chief Creative Officer Aaron Ableman drop a verse for the song. Kweli liked one of Aaron’s rhymes and asked if he could build on it. Aaron was thrilled, since Kweli is one of his top musical inspirations.

After the prep, Kweli proceeded to write lyrics in the engineering booth, head bopping to a loop of the beat. after abotu 45 minutes fo writing, Kweli announced he was ready and headed into the recording booth with Aaron and BALANCE’s videographer Lucas Guilkey. Kweli dropped some two crucial verses, accentuated parts of the rhymes with ad-libs and sang the chorus. After that, he did a shout-out on video, a call to support BALANCE and a brief interview.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates on Pacha’s Pajamas in-studio recordings and snippets from recording sessions!

Green For All Fellow Update: People are Talking about Pacha’s Pajamas

I didn’t realize when Rosa Gonzalez invited me to join the Fourth Class of Green For All fellows that it would help catalyze my life’s work.  What started out as a project to document stories in South Africa in January 2011 morphed into a story-centered advocacy project that helped prevent disproportionate impact of layoffs on flatland schools in Oakland in April 2011. Now it appears altogether something different but it still has story at its center, and it speaks to me deeply.

Getting to BALANCE

Going into 2010, I could feel that the foundation for my life’s work was emerging.  So I really dug into the work, foregoing many social and recreational opportunities.  My solace at the time was that 2011 would be the year for me to cultivate balance.  I remember my Grandma used to say, “Be careful for what you ask for, ‘cause you might get it.”  In 2011, the balance I got turned out to be BALANCE Edutainment (“BALANCE”), a social enterprise I started with Aaron Ableman.

BALANCE is an edutainment production firm that develops educational entertainment products at the intersection of pop culture, health and sustainability.  The company’s current efforts are focused on solving one of the world’s most pressing problems, that is, bringing environmental consciousness to the masses. The environmental movement is near a tipping point that could make being green a way of life, but it needs to engage youth, people of color and mainstream thinkers. Our flagship brand Pacha’s Pajamas helps young people to learn about their relationships with other species and ecosystems, and to more fully appreciate Nature. BALANCE is developing “Pacha’s Pajamas” as a social brand that combines corporate branding techniques, entertainment, and ecological education. The brand has licensable elements as well as a number of products with licensable elements. We are positioning Pacha to be the first animated music sensation on Youtube; her music features celebrities and talented child vocalists and emcees.

BALANCE is in an exciting moment. Our book has received amazing testimonials from giants like Van Jones and Vandana Shiva.  Our performances have reached approximately 8,000 kids and adults to rave reviews. In fact, we just had a performance at the Chabot Space & Science Center this past weekend.  We are also getting tremendous interest in collaborating from social enterprises and nonprofits.

BALANCE is like a sprout breaking through the soil; our current size has no bearing on the size we could become and yet, at the same time, we are vulnerable, requiring ample water, minerals and sun.  We are raising funds through a Loudsauce crowdfunding campaign to display our ads before Justin Bieber Videos.  We have rewards that make great gifts for kids like books and CDs.

Green Gifting

We have an eBook, a softcover book and now an EP with four songs and two excerpts from the musical story.  We also have a Books-to-Schools program.

Black Star in the house!

Mos Def (now known as Yasiin Bey) is the narrator of the story. Talib Kweli raps from the perspective of a Butterfly and does the voiceover for Pebble.  Majora Carter is Tree. Lyrics Born is Whale.  Six young ladies (7-14) selected from our national auditions are on the EP including Teana from Stockton, Sage from San Francisco and Lil’ Lissy from Deltona, Florida.

Have A Ball Pacha but Keep the Green Parts green

We are super excited to be collaborating with green cartoonist and artist Joe Mohr.  Joe saw a Twitter post about our work with Mos and Kweli, checked out Pacha’s Pajamas and was motivated to get involved.  He tweeted back and the rest is history.  The tweet exchange is below.

In his first email to us, Joe offered to draw Pacha into his “Have a Ball” poem and painting/print, which “has been my top selling painting, print and poem. Besides some of my cartoons, it is by far my most popular creation.”  We read the poem and were immediately captivated by its wise simplicity and inspired to work with Joe.

Well, just today Joe sent us the finished piece, “Have A Ball, Pacha”. Its beautiful as you can see above.
Please enjoy this image!  Share it or this page if you like it. Use it for your Facebook profile if you wanna be really cool in our eyes. We plan to offer a limited edition print (giclee stretched over 16″x16″ canvas), available on the Pacha’s Pajamas site.  Stayed tuned for cost and instructions for ordering.  In the meantime, you can receive one of the first-run limit edition prints as a gift for contribution of $150 or more towards our KickStarter campaign.

Below is a bit more about Joe. You can see why we are so happy to be collaborating.  Dave Room, BALANCE Edutainment says “You know something is aligning when folks like Joe appear out of relative nowhere and want to join the team.”  Look out for more news surrounding this budding partnership.
